WSJ Expands News Room

by Eric H. Doss on 31 March 2008

This is great news for me.  I have been a subscriber to the WSJ print edition for a while now and my only regret was that it didn’t cover more national/international news.  The Washington Post is carrying a story that Murdoch is expanding the newsroom and trying to include more content.

Personally, I am a huge fan of the A-hed, and would hate to see anything substantial happen to the articles, but I can understand the need to put more important news above the fold.

As this story mentions, the Journal has long been the second paper to many.  For the last two years, I subscribed to The Washington Post or The Washington Times as my primary news source.  I would often read the Post or the Times first and then follow up with the Journal for the business coverage.

At the end of the day, I cannot see this as a bad thing.  So long as the Journal keeps it’s primary focus on business and augments that with other news, I will continue to be a loyal subscriber.  Now, if Murdoch guts too much of the business and finance content, I will have to reconsider.  But in a ‘flat’ world, even the most minuscule international story impacts business and I welcome the additional reporting.
