Resurrection of an iPod

by Eric H. Doss on 8 December 2008

A few months ago I mentioned that my 3 plus year old iPod died.  For several months, I would occasionally get the “Unhappy iPod” graphic when I turned the device on.  Based on a few recommendations, I would then slam the iPod on my desk and it would start working again.  Finally though, the machine completely died.  Based on my best guess, I figured it was the hard drive.  Looking around eBay, drives were going for $75 bucks or more, too much to invest in an old iPod.

A few days ago, somone suggested that it could be my battery, not the hard drive, that was causing the error.  Seven dollars later (Thanks eBay) I had a new battery on the way.  In less than 20 minutes yesterday, I opened the iPod, replaced the battery, and closed the whole thing up.  I was a bit surprised that the iPod started right up and still had all my songs stored on the drive.  I’m not sure if this fix will last forever or if it’s even solved my problem, but for 7 bucks, I’m pretty happy.  If you have an older iPod that dies, I would highly recommend trying to find a new battery on eBay and give it a shot.  Even if it doesn’t fix the problem, it’s money well spent before shelling out a few hundred bucks on a new device.
