Federal Trade Commission to Regulate Paid Blogging?

I have to admit that this one slipped by me at first.  But, with the recent excitement about Twitter, YouTube, and blogging related to the Iranian election, I felt it was good to talk about how blogging, and social/new media in general, is growing up a bit.

I don’t have any love lost for folks that get paid to shill for a product.  Personally, I don’t run any ads on this site and don’t think that I will in the future.  At most, I might be interested in adding affiliate links to products and services that I buy or that I have found helpful.

In a sign of it’s coming of age, the blogosphere will probably be a bit surprised to see that the FTC has decided to start limiting and regulating claims made on blogs.

Personally, I think it’s great.  Advertising is how most media outlets make their money, be it newspapers, radio, television, or online.  If you start regulating how to separate the factual from the sponsored, you will create a more trusting environment for advertisers and consumers.
